Two approaches to Combat: natural reaction of the Optimum reaction VS

In my experience, there are 2 approaches to self-defense and that two of them are finally effective. The approach you will want to take will likely be determined by your commitment to training and your training objectives.

The first approach, that is what I call "natural reaction". We all have a natural instinct for survival and some means of combat are inherent to everyone. For example, we did learn how to start a good old-fashioned haymaker. And does it not to have someone teach us to throw our arms around the neck of someone to smother the if we get in a game of catch with them. It is all natural, instinctive, reactions that we have done since our first battle school. Other examples: increase our share of block while jerking our heads to avoid punches and entering our opponent when we are bombarded by punching.

In the "Natural reaction" approach to the learning of self-defence rather than fight against these natural responses, we learn to refine their and use as a basis for their approach to fighting. In other words, as a natural response is to enter my opponent when I lose the punching game why do not practice the guy in such a way that it is easy to take it to the ground or knees and elbows in close to fire. In addition, learn how to effectively choke so that when you're instinctively wrap your arms around the neck of the guy you can ensure that it is tight and the guy is not able to get out. And practical counter after you block or lean back so that you can take full advantage of these reactions.

Training yourself to take advantage of your natural reaction is very effective, especially since in a scenario of actual self-defense when our adrenaline is pumping our natural instincts tend to take in any way, which means that these strategies that you practiced in the room of gym and complex techniques are likely to be completely out the window.

At the other end of the spectrum is what I call "Optimum reaction." Optimal reaction is based on the fact that as humans, we are able to use our logic and reason to come with even better responses to attacks that our natural responses, and we can even take advantage of natural reactions of the people. In other words, we can train ourselves to circumvent our natural responses to use the most optimal reaction, that we can find with a given attack.

There are certainly advantages to this approach as well, and there are ways to prepare so that you are able to use in a situation of self-defence at high pressure. Learn to relax and stay calm in intense situations is the key to this approach.

If I use a couple of martial arts to illustrate these two approaches, I would suggest that Krav Maga is an effective application of the "Natural reaction" approach, while Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a strong example of the approach "Optimum reaction."

To determine what approach to take for yourself, I suggest first looking at how much time you are ready to implement training. If you are simply looking for a database of self-defense skills that I would recommend learning something "Natural reaction" based. If you are ready to spend years to hone your skills as a martial artist then methods "Optimum reaction" is probably better for you. Think also about the intensity that you are ready to take your training. If you are looking for packaging especially then the "natural reaction" methods give you what you need to hold your own in a fight, and you can pass the rest of your time to develop your physical condition and attributes. If, on the other hand, you are ready to train in certain high stress, the conditions of full-contact, and then choose the "Optimum response" method may be more ideal since you will be able to retrain your natural reactions under stress.

There are certain arts which are a hybrid of the two. MMA is an example. The demand in a fighter aircraft conditioning MMA that many MMA fighters have focused on "Natural reaction" based methods as their Foundation. Although the level of competition increases the MMA fighter is forced to be as strong in the development of their game "Optimum reaction."

Jeet Kune Do is another hybrid of the two, combining the techniques of self-defense faster, easier and more effective. For example, in my school the first defence that I teach students is what I call the defensive SHELL. While getting rid of weaknesses and gaps, could have, he took advantage of the response "natural reaction". We develop this as the Foundation for the defence of the student. Then, we are moving towards better, more technical optimum defence as INTERCEPTION - "optimal reaction."
