The Illusion of Jockdom is a mistaken belief that the strength of the muscles is all-powerful in a self-defense, competitive or hostile engagement. A concept often found and promoted by naive, egocentric, responsible for testosterone and not any young men without any understanding of combat, battle or war, the Illusion of Jockdom usually afflicts men in their teens, twenty and thirty years, but it can affect anyone of any age. Unfortunately, the Illusion of Jockdom is a recipe for injury or even death.
History brims gushingly with examples of major wars, battles, individual confrontations and clashes of mano a mano in which a smaller, less apparent force or person has destroyed a larger and more apparently powerful. The story of David and Goliath is a good start for those who think otherwise. If additional research is needed, the battles of the ancient Lord of war, Sun Tzu, the Roman defeat of the English at the battle of Watling Street in 60AD, or the Greek battle of Thermopylae in 480 b.c. are worthy of study.
On a personal note, as having studied and taught martial arts professionally for decades, I can honestly say that a person mean that is well trained, committed and skilled in the arts of fighting will be overcome an individual suffering the torments of the Jockdom. Muscle power is no match to Warrior. In addition, a trained martial artist, size of the opponent is no deterrent.
The fight is an art and a science. It involves the body and mind and permeates the individual to the knowledge of the war, tactics, strategies. The fight is more mental than physical. In his famous treatise the Art of war, Sun Tzu said: the war is a serious problem of the State. It must be carefully studied. Notice that Sun Tzu does not just war must be studied (a mental function), but it must be carefully studied. If the war was only physical, why nations have colleges of war? Why should the United States Military Academy at West Point, Annapolis, the Air Force and Coast Guard? There are academies teach the art of war, not the size of his biceps.
True story. A middle-aged man acted very strangely outside a local gym. The only trainer in the gym has been advised of the presence of human and caution. Informed of the situation, the trainer flexed his right biceps, and then to his left and noted that, if human disorder caused her biceps (of the trainer) would protect everyone. Really? Are bulletproof biceps? Can they stop knives, clubs and other weapons? That they can neutralize a person with a superior knowledge of combat? The trainer was about 6' 3 ", a student, good physics but still, unfortunately, blinded by the malignant disease of Jockdom." Perhaps he did not know that a few weeks earlier a young strength and conditioning of a hockey coach team in a local high school was stabbed to death following a fight. All its muscles did a not help him. In fact, they could be the result of him having killed if he agreed with the Illusion of Jockdom, who said, "I am difficult, I am strong, I have muscles." I can't be beaten. "Such naivety may well have contributed to the cause of his disappearance. Muscle gaining wars. Make the brain drain.
Morality and history of a Word to the wise: do not fall into the egocentric trap of Jockdom - to think that only the muscles will allow you to save or save the day. Such thinking is immature, silly and potentially fatal. Also, never underestimate the ability of the adversary, regardless of size, age or sex. You may be a big jock, an outstanding athlete, a towering figure, but if you go to engage in the battle, which is always potentially dangerous, even fatal - you would be better bring more to the party than simply your muscles.
